Yurii Palkov. Ideas Fi(r)st.

I hold a pencil, a brush, a pen — all in my fist. Not as a trick, but because I never learned to do it differently. Technique comes second. The idea comes first. My works are not illustrations — they are thoughts taking shape: insects, cats, fragments of everyday reality, visual riddles waiting for interpretation. Sometimes I draw with both hands. Sometimes with wine, coffee, or ink. The medium changes. The intention does not. I don’t paint images. I draw ideas.

THE ARTIST & THE IDEA

BIO
Yurii Palkov is a contemporary artist based in Chișinău, Moldova. Working across drawing, painting, and mixed media, he has developed a distinctive visual language where physical gesture meets conceptual thinking.
Educated in graphic arts and shaped by close dialogue with sculpture and classical painting, his artistic path includes mural work, independent graphic series, and interdisciplinary collaborations. His practice grows from observation — of places, people, and the quiet contradictions of everyday life.
For Palkov, drawing is not a style.
It is a way of seeing.
PHILOSOPHY
Ideas always come first.
A work may begin with a line, a random stain of coffee, or an image noticed in passing. The result often balances irony and sincerity, simplicity and depth. Reality becomes slightly displaced — not to escape it, but to look at it more closely.
The viewer is invited to complete the work through interpretation. Meaning is not fixed; it emerges in the space between image and perception.
THE METHOD
Yurii draws with his fist — the way he has held a pencil since childhood. What once appeared unconventional became part of his visual language.
The gesture creates tension in the line: direct, physical, unpolished. Yet the technique is never the goal. A drawing exists only when it carries an idea.
The hand is only a tool.
The real instrument is perception.

Every series begins with an idea — sometimes clear, sometimes intuitive. Lines become characters, symbols turn into quiet narratives, and simple forms reveal layered meanings.
From raw fist-drawn graphics to surreal figurative images shaped by irony and observation, each work invites the viewer to pause and look again.

IN THE STUDIO

Drawing begins before the first line appears.
Ideas grow from observation — street scenes, conversations, fleeting moments, contradictions noticed in passing. Sketchbooks are always close. Sometimes a work starts as a quick note, a coffee stain, or an uncertain line searching for form.
In the studio, the process remains physical and direct: paper, pressure, movement. Drawing with a fist turns each gesture into a balance between control and chance.
What matters is presence — the moment an idea becomes visible.
